“Waiho mā o mahi koe e kōrero”
Let the work speak for itself
Nau mai, haere mai ki te Pūrongo ā-Tau mō te Pānga o Hui E! – 2022/23
This year, we’ve decided to let our mahi (work) and the voices of those we collaborate with do the talking. We invite you to explore these pages to discover the real stories, the profound impact, and the encouraging words from the Hui E! community. Tomo mai.
“Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.” – This proverb reminds us that it takes a village, a collective effort of many, to achieve great things. This includes the relentless dedication of Māori, community, and voluntary groups, who continue to work tirelessly in their communities despite the ongoing challenges of a pandemic and global, national, and local crises, such as war, climate disasters, inflation, and the ‘cost of living crisis.’ At Hui E!, our commitment is unwavering – to tautoko (support) you and your mahi so that you can do what you do best.
We also extend our heartfelt mihi (acknowledgment) to our Mema Whanaungatanga, volunteers, and community, government, and funding partners. We acknowledge that we can only accomplish what we do because of your trust and support, hence the whakatauku: Mā pango, mā whero, ka oti te mahi / Together, we can make a difference.
By the end of the year, we released our new moemoeā (vision), whakatakanga (mission) and strategic priorities. We are proud to set a clear focus for our journey ahead and our mahi behind us.

Being the change
Hui E! is focusing on being the change it wants to see.
This has these core elements:
- Using a Te Tiriti relationship framework across the organisation and an ongoing commitment to being a better Te Tiriti partner and ally
- Developing one funding application and reporting approach for all funders, driving better funding for the sector and changing funding models
- From 1 July 2023 Hui E! will use social procurement for better social outcomes, by supporting Māori and Pasifika suppliers
- Stopping offering free advice to government and business, to shift the expectation that the sector works for free
- Think pieces on changes needed and ways to get there, for funding, sector wellbeing and community service delivery – pepa mā (white papers)
- Leading conversations to develop new paths and alternatives.
Value added
by Hui E!
”I feel that Hui E! provides a voice for organisations to say the things that feel too risky to say directly to funders, and that’s vital.”

Sector Voices
“Hui E! has established robust and genuine connections with community groups across Aotearoa, which gives them the ability to advocate effectively and exert strategic influence at a government level.”
“Two of our donors heard Vu Le speak while in NZ and have completely changed their funding to be equity-focused.”
“Honestly, today I felt like it was a massive day of hearing genuine feedback from the sector and it was humbling. I also feel really heartened that we are heading in the right direction with lots of our thinking so that’s exciting too.”
“I admire their commitment to an evidence-based approach, actively collecting real-time data and capturing untold stories. In particular, they shed light on the immense pressures faced by community groups and their leaders, emphasising not only the remarkable work they do but also the challenges they encounter and the constant pressure they face to meet the needs of their communities.”
“Hui E! has opened up the funding space for us. As Māori and Pacific providers it is hard for us to find support in the system to help us get on our feet.”
“Thank you for making us feel seen and sharing our common challenges and self-doubt and encouraging us to raise our voice! We will make noise! We will occupy the spaces to help and represent our communities. Ngā mihi nui e hoa mā!”
Arotahi Ā-Hapori
Community Focus
Our Sector is diverse, kaupapa driven, with an incredible collective capability to innovate and adapt to community needs and to build social cohesion.
Funding remains a crosscutting influence on the sector’s collective adaptability, for workforce, for connection, for Hauora and Well-being in and of the sector, and for Kaimahi, Mema Poari and Kaitūao. At Hui E!, we continue to tautoko the mahi of our smallest community groups. In our Arotahi Ā-Hapori series, we shone a spotlight on their mahi, as they adapted to the impacts of a global pandemic and more recent global, national and local shocks.
“The problem that we have is that we don’t have the capability within our team to write those funding documents ourselves, and Hui E! was able to connect us with providers who could help. They [Hui E!] also offered us the opportunity to be a part of their wider services through participation in things like industry surveys.”
Tavai Meni, Aute Pasifika Sports Academy
“The Hui E! programme is really awesome. The funding process was really challenging to get my head around at first, with lots of back and forth, but I felt really supported … I’m not afraid now to apply for funding again when I need it. I’ve got a much better idea of what the process is like.”
Liya Lupala, The Blackhouse
“In signing up for Hui E!’s network and regular newsletters, I realised the importance of collaboration and of knowing what is going on elsewhere in Aotearoa … They [Hui E!] treat the people in their network and their mahi as both valuable and valued, and they’re always ready and willing to help, despite how busy they must be.”
