When recent weather events hit the region, Papakura Marae again stepped up to support their hapori (community). Following the Tamaki Makaurau Floods on 27 January, the marae became a crucial point of contact for those needing flood support. In addition to sharing information to assist communities, they opened their doors to provide a space for evacuees, offering hot kai and warm beds to vulnerable communities in uncertain times.
Papakura Marae, an Incorporated Society established in 1980, is a pillar of strength for the people of Papakura and its surrounding suburbs. With a deep commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the marae provides cultural, health, and social services to the hapori, including food parcels and donation drives for those in need, driving classes, weekly community kai with LIFE Community Kitchens, and ongoing support for all communities.
The marae’s commitment to their hapori runs deep, and their efforts to support those in need are unwavering. Papakura Marae is a shining example of the positive impact that a community-centred organisation can have on the people they serve.
