Community Trusts (various regional deadlines)

New Zealand has an expansive regional network of community trusts.  One of the roles of these Community Trusts is to provide funding support to a range of community organisations and charities. Click here to find your local trust.

Ethnic Communities Development Fund

There is $4.2 million a year available through the Ethnic Communities Development Fund. It is available for projects that support ethnic communities to grow their skills, celebrate their culture and take part in society. It is also available for initiatives that support our communities as they deal with the challenges of COVID-19. More information can be found here.

Royal Commission of Inquiry Ethnic and Faith Community Engagement Fund

New Funding is available to help communities engage with Government following the Royal Commission of Inquiry. The Fund aims to support minority ethnic and religious communities to engage with the Government so they can inform the Government’s response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Terrorist Attack on Christchurch Mosques on 15 March 2019. Specific funding to support Māori Organisations

There are a number of organisations in Aotearoa that provide funding for charities. Charities Services have created a list of funders who give grants that specifically support Māori organisations. Click here to visit their website.


Northland region

Foundation North

Foundation North have two funding programmes that are open all year, and that you can apply for online at any time.

  • Quick Response Grants – up to $25,000
  • Community Grants – more than $25,000

They also offer funding that works in new ways to achieve impact. These tend to be experimental programmes that are available for fixed periods, or on an invitation basis. For more info visit

Northland Community Foundation

Northland Community Foundation has created the Northland COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund (Northland COVID-19 Fund). Funding will go towards essential services supporting their most vulnerable Northland communities dealing with COVID-19. Click here for more information or contact directly.

Waikato region

Waikato Community Funders Group

Over $3m in funding has been announced by the Waikato Community Funders Group to support non-profit organisations working on the frontline to help vulnerable people affected by COVID-19.

Due to the need for rapid response, the application process has been fast-tracked and groups can make just one application through Trust Waikato, which is then shared with the Waikato Community Funders Group.

Wellington region

Wellington Community Trust

The Wellington Community Trust has funding available for registered community community organisations in the Wellington region: 

  1. General Grant for operational and project-based funding – up to $50,000
  2. Lift Grant for professional development and capability training – up to $10,000
